Project objectives |

The project will contribute to the increased capacity of the local government to implement environmental policies and sustainable development in accordance with EU standards. Specifically, the project will:
- Secure significant progress in clean-up and sustainable development in the “hot spots” of Stan Trg/Stari Trg and Novo Brdo/Artana mines
- Strengthen the mechanisms of good governance and policy integration in local institutions
- Strengthen and mobilise the indigenous capacity for policy development, integration, implementation and evaluation at the national and regional level.
Expected outputs and activities
Output no. 1: Remediation of Stan Trg/Stari Trg and Novo Brdo/Artana minesIndicative activities:
- Riverbed Protection at Tailing 2 in Artana
- Transport of Tailings 1 from Artana mine to Kishnica processing Plant
- Dam Crest Rehabilitation at Stari Trg, Mitrovica
- Evaluation and dissemination of results, including a documentary (implemented by local NGO) of the hotspots describing the initial situation, project efforts and achieved results
Output no. 2: Demonstration and information sharing through policy integrationIndicative Activities:
- Assessment of policy integration mechanisms and practice at the national and local level [1]
- Seminars on environmental economics and policy integration – including the promotion of access to information and linking to Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Strategic Environment Assessment (SEA) as mechanisms to implement policy recommendations
- Participation in regional meetings on sustainable environmental management
Output no. 3: Improving capacities of local environmental professionalsIndicative Activities
- Market survey of professional environmental services in Kosovo
- Establishment of a roster of qualified environmental experts
- Seminars on sustainable development in the mining, energy and industrial sectors

[1] This assessment will also include a functional analysis of the specific mechanisms for this purpose in each country. The assessment will be made by the project team in consultation with a wide group of stakeholders including government ministries, regional and local authorities, NGOs, private sector and international donors. The results of the study will focus on existing good practices, problems in integration, existing bottlenecks and opportunities for improving the level of policy integration, effectiveness and efficiency.
